The Vedic Art
and Science of Healing

Ayurveda is a science based on ancient Indian philosophy. It can appropriately be called ‘ The Science of Living’. Ayurveda traces its etymology to Ayush, meaning ‘Life’, and Veda, which originates from vid or knowledge. Popularly speaking, Ayurveda can be defined as a medical science which helps the human body to keep fit. While providing cures from indigenous plants.

Ayurveda is, essentially, the science of healthy living; it is as much concerned with the normal as with the abnormal or pathological. Being essentially a science of healing, it concentrates on what is required to lead a healthy, normal life. It deals not only with what is to be done when one falls ill, but also with what should be done to maintain one’s health and vigour.

Origin
of Ayurveda

Even though references to the principles of medicine are found in most of the Vedas, the main body of Ayurveda is found in the fourth veda – the Atharva Veda. It is also  recognized as an upa or supplementary Veda in its own right . It contains the description of various diseases and their aetiology, and recommends the correct diet and behaviour regimen to counter these diseases.

Sushruta, a renowned surgeon and student of Dhanwantari, wrote his famous compendium on surgery – the Sushruta Samhita To Charaka, who probably lived sometime between the second century B.C. and the second century A.D.,goes the credit for the famous treatise on general medicine, the Charaka Samhita.  Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita area the two ancient treatises on which Ayurveda is based.

Ayurveda, the knowledge of life and longevity, is perhaps the oldest existing body of traditional medical knowledge in the world. It is a natural approach to achieving perfect self, natural beauty and longevity. More than 600 scientific studies in 27 countries at 200 institutions have verified the effectiveness of this ancient system in many areas of disease and treatment.

Ayurvedic treatment focuses on the cure of illness by eradicating the root cause, rather than treating or suppressing the symptoms. Internal medication and specific external therapy modalities are employed depending on the chronicity, location and severity of the condition. Holistic medicine has effectively played the role of alternative health care support over the centuries.
